I found it. Thre’s a bug in the code.
if you replace
echo get_avatar( $user->ID, ”, ”, ”, $args );
echo get_avatar( $user->user_id, ”, ”, ”, $args );
all avatars show correctly.
The reason for this to show up as a bug is probably that with formidable and possibly other plugins “$user->ID <> $user->user_id”
$user->ID is the “entry ID”, but not the user ID.
The user ID is in $user->user_id
This problem is not solved. It persists up until today in 2018. It occurs when accounts are created through certain plugins. For example accounts created through the formidable plugin have valid accouts/avatars, but the avatars do show up as “mystery-garavatars” in global maps (for example).
Once the account is createte, there is no way to get the avatar back. Deleting the image, recreate a new one doesn’t help. Any account created by formidable forever shows the mystery-avatar on GeoMyWP.
The html code in that case looks like this:
I have not found out why this link is created instead of the normal wordpress avatar link.
Is there anyone who solved this?
Hi, have the axact same issue. We use buddypress with buddyboss’s boss theme. It appears the empty avatars occur when the user-location is set before there’s an avatar uploaded. In my view the plugin isn’t syncing correctly with the user database. But I don’t know how to fix that.
Yes, there’s lots of stuff in functions.php but nothing that has remotely to do with maps. If I rename functions.php the problem persists. strange.
I found theres a maxzoom variable in maps, but the only occurence of that in my site is in your plugin directory, and there you set it to nothing special.
I”ll do some more searching. Do you have a hint for me on what to look for?
Thank you for taking a look.
You can see it in the link below under private content.
Zoom in on any of the avatars. It stops at the size of a small town. Do the same, on the same place in google maps and you get down to a zoom level, where a house for example fills the whole screen.
If you need access to the site, i can provide that. But it feels to me like it’s got nothing to do with any settings.

no, it’s not the cluster break out.
The global map of users, we use that to show the users avatars. If we zoom in on one of the avatars to see where exctly the guy placed himself, the zooming does not go as deep in as it normally does in google maps. You can normally zoom in on a house, for example, but here it stops much earlier, at the size of a small town, as if theres a maximum zooom level defined.
Is that cut-off defined in your plugin oder does google prevent teh API users to zoom as deep as you could when using google maps directly?
long time no answer 🙁
In the meantime, I saw the gravity forms demo. Does it make sense to use gravityforms to insert a location-picker into the front-end template ?
How far away “roughly” is version 3.0 ? I read that it would contain a front-end location picker. If that’s not too far away, i’d rather use that than adding the additional complexity of gravity forms to my site ….
